Gamini's funeral at Independence Square

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday gave her approval to have leading film idol Gamini Fonseka's funeral at the Independence Square in Colombo on Sunday.

President Kumaratunga has approved this after considering requests by several organisations and individuals and also after a discussion with Cultural and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath.

Funerals at the Independent Square is only for Heads of State, national leaders and political leaders.

President Kumaratunga has taken this decision after considering Fonseka's service to uplift the cinema industry.

The remains of Fonseka are lying at his residence in Ja-Ela, Ekala. Fonseka was 68 at the time of death following a sudden heart attack on Thursday evening.

Thousands of film fans yesterday flocked to the Fonseka residence to pay their respects and tributes to the man who entertained cinemagoers for over four decades with his outstanding performances on the silver screen.

His remains will be kept at the National Art Gallery from 10am on Sunday.
