Producing quality Lankan products with
Japanese help

Sri Lanka should take a cue from Vietnam's economy and look for more investment opportunities from Japan. Vietnam which underwent a prolonged war has now recovered from it and is among the best nations for investments. The country has been classified as one of the most investment friendly countries and is the showcase of Asia.

Many international counters have investments and the main attraction is the cheap labour.

Sri Lanka too can learn from the Vietnam experience said an Indonesian investor now based in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Professor Gamini Keerawella of the University of Peradeniya, featured in the September 2004 issue of the Japan Journal said that Sri Lanka should also obtain more economic assistance from Japan. "The Japanese government is the largest foreign aid donor to Sri Lanka. In addition they also play a major role in the peace process," he said.

One of the first Japanese companies to invest in Sri Lanka is Noritake Porcelain. They are very pleased about their investment and had expanded rapidly. It has a $ 11 million annual output and employs over 1,200. Japan has helped Vietnam in a big way towards their economic development and Sri Lanka too should try to obtain more technical assistance from Japan.

A Sri Lanka businessman doing active business in Japan said that Sri Lanka is yet to fully exploit obtaining technical assistance from Japan.

"We have only been concentrating on obtaining foreign aid and this should change," he said.

Sri Lanka's Ambassador in Japan Tilak Amunugama said that this area was addressed by the recent visit of Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadiragamar who negotiated to invite intellectuals from Japan to visit Sri Lanka and address seminars.

"This is a step taken in the right direction as Japan is an intercultural power house," he said. (SS)
