Pramodya for Chess Olympiad Pramodya R. Senanayake of Musaeus College, Colombo is to represent Sri Lanka at the 36th Chess Olympiad 2004 in Spain and the World Youth Chess Championship 2004 in Greece in early November. Pramodya, a grade 9 student is the captain of the under 15 chess team in her college and has proven her ability in the game during several tournaments in the past. She is currently the National Chess Champion in under 14 girls category. The Musaeus College chess team captained by her won the all island chess championship at the fourth National Schools Games held in Colombo recently. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka has endorsed her participation in the forthcoming events. Chess Olympiad is the largest and the most prestigious event in the world chess calendar with the participation of 1,500 players. And the World Youth Chess Championship is the largest chess event for youth. This gives an opportunity to attain the coveted International Rating at a very young age. Pramodya is confident that she could compete with much poise and bring honour to the country. However, Pramodya's participation in these two tournaments will largely depend on the support of the donors. She is unable to bear the cost of the whole tour which is about Rs. 200,000. Pramodya hopes that she would be supported by numerous donors by way of sponsoring her tour. Those who wish to support Pramodya could contact the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, 14, Reid Avenue, Colombo 7 or Pramodya Senanayake on 2780124, 0777-942721. |
