Two ANCL staffers win Green Protection Golden Awards

The Green Media Network, a Non-Governmental organisation comprising a group of Environmental Organisations have decided to award "Haritha Rakshana Swarna Sammana" (Green Protection Golden Awards) to two Lake House journalists, Nihal Abeysinghe Deputy Editor of the Silumina and Florence Wickramage of the Daily News.

The event is sponsored by GEF - the Small Grants Facility of the UNDP. The award winning journalists have been selected by an independent panel of experts who took into consideration the services rendered by the two journalists towards Environmental Protection during the past 20 years.

The award ceremony will be held on October 01 at 6 p.m. at the Namel-Malini Punchi Theratre at Borella at which Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie will be the Chief Guest.

The Coordinator of the GEF facility Ms. Sherine Samarasekera and Veteran Journalist Edwin Ariyadasa will also be present.

Abeysinghe had been the recipient of the "Upali Wijewardene Award for the Best Feature Writer" and a "Special Jury Award" by the Editors' Guild of Sri Lanka. He also won the "Best Science Writer Award" for the years 1996, 1998 and 1999 from the Sri Lanka Association for the Advance of Science.

Florence Wickramage has served as a News and Programme Producer of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation for a period of 15 years, during which period she also functioned as the Chief Coordinator for Asiavision.

Florence received the "Best Environment Reporter -2003 Award" from the Editors' Guild of Sri Lanka.

Krishna Wijebandara of Lakbima, Sisira Suraweera of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Sarath Kumara Perera of the Independent Television Network and Lal Sarath Kumara of the Sirasa Television will also receive "Haritha Rakshana Swarna Sammana" at the ceremony.
