The Government Medical Officers Association while urging Healthcare Nutrition and UVA Wellassa Development Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to interview in the issue of "overnight Russian Degrees" has requested the Minister to grant them an interview in this regard. Issuing a press statement the GMOA says that the Association has taken note of the Sri Lanka Medical College spokesman's statement. This statement implies that SLMC will be allowing these AMP's to sit for Act 16 examination. This issue of overnight Russian Degree has a long history, which has to be clarified and understood. The AMPs' writ application in the Court of Appeal stated that the "Health Ministry made arrangements with the Russian University is to follow the course for them (AMPs) to obtain a postgraduate qualification". Further more the Ministry of Health has equated competency certificate of AMPs and 7 years of service of AMPs in the department as equivalent to the graduate qualification of the MBBS and the Ministry has granted paid leave for a period of 2 years. The GMOA has repeatedly informed the ministry and the departmental officials that a gross malpractice has taken place in the process of obtaining a degree in Russia within 6 months and needless to say that those affected would be the medical practitioners who are duly qualified. Since the GMOA represent almost 90% of these duly qualified MOO it request the Minister of Health to intervene in this matter. Furthermore the GMOA has requested for an urgent meeting with the Minister of Health to discuss the issue of "Overnight Russian Degrees" and place before him the concerns of the GMOA. |
