by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi He was well dressed and sporting sunglasses the epitome of polish and respectability. It was around 12.40 pm, the Ragama Railway station as usual was teeming with passengers - most visitors to the Ragama Teaching Hospital. The Rambukkana bound train hissed to a halt at platform No. 2. This drove the passengers into a mad rush to board the train. Amidst the melee a woman screamed. In a moment, it transpired that she was trying to protect her handbag. The young man mentioned was seen making a beeline to another compartment not betraying anything unusual. It did not take much long for the tale to unfold. It transpired that using a sharp weapon, the youth had attempted to cut open the woman's hand-bag but failed in his bid. The woman explained she felt a tug at her hand bag and had instinctively made a protective grab at it. It was then she noticed a huge slash in her bag. A razor knife had been used in the operation, its wielder -the nattily dressed young man. She could not control the cry that rose in her throat. As her shrieks grew loud, the would be pick-pocket mingled into the background unruffled and sleekly and stepped into another compartment. He did not seem to fear any one - no one dared to challenge him or summon help. Women at the Ragama Railway Station, keep an eye on your hand-bag, especially when boarding a train. |
