Trade exhibition in Iran to promote local products

by Irangika Range

The Export Development Board (EDB) in collaboration with Sri Lanka's Embassy in Iran and the Private Sector Business and Publishing Centre (PSBPC) in Iran will organise the trade exhibition and seminar for the first time in Iran to promote local products.

The exhibition and seminar will be held from November 26 to 28 in Teheran, Iran. The PSBPC, an established firm has been importing Sri Lankan tea for the past 50 years in Iran.

This is an exclusive exhibition for local manufacturers and exporters to display local products and service in Iran and it will develop business relations further between the two countries by promoting Sri Lanka's exports to Iran. The seminar will also be held simultaneously with the exhibition to introduce local products to meet Iran market requirements.

An official of the EDB said the main objective is to create opportunities in the Iran market by attracting more business visitors from different provinces in Iran. "Iran which has the market potential will help other countries to enter its market. Iran's market was expanded recently.

The local participants can gain more benefits such as build new trade links and identify new developments in the Iran market. The other Sri Lankan organisations participating in this event will be the Sri Lanka Tea Board, Sri Lanka Tourist Board and Board of Investment of Sri Lanka," he said. "It is proposed to select around 12 exporters including SMEs and to obtain orders worth around Rs. 80 million this year. The Iranian government also follows a liberalisation policy to import tea from May this year," he said.

Iran is one of the largest tea buyers for Sri Lanka and imports over 83 percent of tea from Sri Lanka. The total exports of local products including tea, desiccated coconut and natural rubber to Iran was US$ 35.22 million in 2003 while it was US$ 35.04 million in 2002.
