EPDP member's coffin placed near Norwegian Embassy by Ranil Wijayapala The Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) yesterday placed yet another the coffin bearing remains of a slain member outside the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo demanding the direct involvement of the Norwegian facilitators to put an end to the killing of their members by the LTTE. The coffin carrying the remains of EPDP member Somasunderam Weerasingham was placed outside the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo around 11 am yesterday along with wreaths. According to a Norwegian Embassy spokeswoman, Ambassador Hans Brattskar has contacted EPDP Leader Douglas Devananda requesting for the removal of the coffin from the site. Last week too, hundreds of EPDP members staged a protest opposite the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo placing a coffin bearing the remains of Puttalam District Party organiser Thambithurai Sivakumaran. According to EPDP media spokesman Nelson Edirisinghe, Somasunderam Weerasingham was the 167th EPDP member killed by the LTTE following the signing of the MoU. Weerasingham was gunned down by suspected LTTE pistol gang members in Wellawatte last Friday. "The Norwegian Ambassador has told EPDP General Secretary Douglas Devananda that they would take every possible step to put an end to the killings of EPDP members by the LTTE," Edirisinghe said. "In all due respect to our member we are removing the coffin from the place where we have placed it and the cremation will be held at the Borella cemetery," he added. The Government in a statement condemned the killing of political members, with diverse political views, by the LTTE. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga also took up this issue last week when she met Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Peterson in New York. |
