Ceylon Biscuits goes for O-Kay portion cakes

by Shirajiv Sirimane

Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) diversified to the manufacturing of cakes last week under the brand name and launched their first product O - Kay portion cake to the market.

The Chairman of CBL M. Wickramasinghe said that there was a demand for portion cakes and diversified to this area. "We are hoping to enter the European Duty Free shopping markets as well as the local and SAARC market with the emphasis on India," he said.

CBL has invested one and a half billion rupees (Rs. 1,500 million) and floated CBL Foods International (Pvt) Ltd., a BOI approved, state-of-the-art factory in Ranala to launch this product. The factory is the first of its kind in South Asia with total automation from start to finish. "O-Kay products are germ free, fresh and made to international standards. This would be vital specially to enter the European and Arab markets," he said. "We have taken a gamble with this investment but I am sure we will succeed like all our other products," he said.

Most of the cakes available in Sri Lanka have a very short shelf life and most of the products available in the market have to be refrigerated. The polythene wrapper too would be another marketing plus point. The portion cake would be available in three flavours with no preservatives.

The company made their first breakthrough in 1968 when the then government and Care International requested them to supply biscuits for the mid day meal for schoolchildren. "The company has been maintaining an upward trend since then," he said.

CBL manufactures Munchee, Ritzbury and Lankasoy and revolutionised the local biscuits, chocolates and soy industries through innovation and unparalleled excellence demonstrated in every sphere of its operations.

CBL's unmatched commitment towards satisfying changing consumer needs through innovation and creativity has been recognised by a host of awards and accolades awarded on numerous occasions.

Seven awards at the SLIM Brand Excellence including the prestigious brand of the year award, CNCI industrial excellence gold award and the NCE export award, are some of the recent achievements of CBL.
