NBRO undertakes solid waste disposal project at Katunayake by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has undertaken designing and construction supervision of the proposed solid waste disposal project at Katunayake. The Board of Investment (BOI) has initiated this project to channel the waste in a manner to prevent the contamination of ground water from leachate discharges. The major components of the project are construction of earth bunds around the land fill, leachate collector and closed conveyor channel with manholes, G. A. P. Ganepola of NBRO said. He said that 23 metric tonnes of solid waste water are disposed from factories in the Katunayake Export Processing Zone which include fabric off-cuts, rubber and rubber based products and paper and card board. The project will be constructed in two stages. Stage one has been completed while operations on stage two have also commenced, Ganepola said. NBRO statistics reveal that the solid waste sector has a value of 1.5% GDP which is equal to the losses arising from road accidents in the country. The solid waste sector has become an issue of national importance with far reaching implications on the economy, NBRO sources said. Prof. Willie Mendis, a leading technocrat has stressed the need of a national strategy to avoid and reduce waste at each source of generation and to reuse and recycle waste as much as possible and finally collect, treat and dispose of the solid waste in an environment friendly manner. |
