Mahanama and St. Paul's students visit Damana MV for humanitarian project

Students and Staff of both Colombo Mahanama College and St. Paul's Girls High School Milagiriya along with the Lions Club of Colombo Metro City - District 306 B visited the village of Damana and donated a large consignment of School equipment, dry rations and agricultural equipment for the children and the general public of the area. A free Eye Camp was also held for the needy.

Mahanama College and St. Paul's Girls High School selected this village which is 16 km away from Pottuvil for their humanitarian project and relief assistance which is coming under their extra curricular activities.

A rousing welcome was accorded to the visiting schools and the Lions by the villagers, Principal, Damana Maha Vidyalaya G. Amarasinghe, Viharadhipathi Ven. Chandrarathana Thera and Daham Pasal students. The roads, schools, Pansala and Dham Pasal were decorated to receive the visitors of the West.

First, they visited Panama Buddhist Temple where they were served with 'Kiribath'. A Computer Unit, Musical set, Uniforms to both students and teachers were presented by the visitors to Daham Pasal. This was followed by the visit Damana Maha Vidyalaya by the visiting Schools and the Lions where the main ceremony was organised.

Principal G. Amarasinghe in his welcome address expressed his grateful thanks to the visiting Schools and the Lions for their generosity and love shown towards them and came forward to assist them travelling all the way from Colombo amidst great hardships and inconveniences.

The Principal, Mahanama College W.H. Premalal Kumarasiri and the Asst. Principal of St. Paul's Girls High School Anula Dasanayake in their address detailed the purpose of their visit and expressed their happiness in meeting the villagers, talking to the farmers and providing school equipment to schoolchildren.

Almost all the students of school numbering 1100 in roll were given school equipment including school uniforms.

These were donated to the students in the packages in three categories looking into their classes. A colourful programme was also staged by the students of Mahanama College, St. Pauls Girls High School and Dhamana Maha Vidyalaya students. Almost all the students of Damana Maha Vidyalaya were served with school equipment including school uniforms.

Meanwhile, the distribution of dry rations consisting of rice, flour, sugar, milk foods etc. were also held at Damana Maha Vidyalaya where the entire villagers got their shares. At the same time the Eye Camp organised by the Lions Club of Metro City Dist. 306 B drew a large crowd.

The Lions also distributed mammoties to the farmers to engage in their agricultural activities.

Speaking to the Press, Head Prefect of Mahanama Collage Kumara Galhenege and the Head Prefect of St. Paul's Girls High School, Milagiriya, Satchini Seelawaradhana said that they really enjoy this memorable trip where they could provide some assistance to the needy children.

The notable feature of this programme is that both students and the parents of the Damana area were provided with gifts of the people of the West. In addition the farmers of the village too were supplied with dry rations and agricultural equipment.
