Indian TU leader here today

Indian trade union leader and Deputy General Secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions for the Asia-Pacific Region H. Mahadevan will arrive in Sri Lanka today (27).

During his stay in Sri Lanka Mahadevan will meet local trade union leaders to discuss common problems faced by the trade union movements in the Asia-Pacific region and exchange views on the challenges faced by the working people from globalization.

He is scheduled to address a meeting of the Joint Trade Union Council on September 28 convened by the Governor of the Western Province Alavi Mowlana. He is also scheduled to meet leaders of the Inter Company Employees' Union, and of the Ceylon Bank Employees Union.

He will also call on the Minister of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Athauda Seneviratne on Wednesday, September 29. On the same day, September 29 will deliver a lecture open to the public, at the Mahaweli Centre, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, at 4.30 p.m on "India, after the 2004 General Elections".

On September 30, Thursday Mahadevan, who is also the Vice Chairman of the National safety Council of India, is scheduled to address members of the Industrial Safety and Health Association of Sri Lanka at 3.30 p.m. at the auditorium of the Employers Federation on the topic "Indian Experience on Occupational Safety and Health, and its practices.

Mahadevan is scheduled to deliver a lecture on "Globalization and its impact on working people" at 4.30 p.m. at a meeting of trade union activists in Kandy on October 2.

He will leave Sri Lanka on October 3.
