150th birth anniversary of Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam

Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam's 150th Birth Anniversary observations will be held at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo 3 on Tuesday, September 28 from 5 p.m. onwards.

This function is being organized by the Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam Trust jointly formed by the All Ceylon Hindu Congress, Colombo North Hindu Paripalana Sangam and family members of the late Sir Pon. Arunachalam.

The Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam Trust has plans to remember Sir Pon. Arunachalam on his 150th Birth Anniversary.

An Essay Competition has been conducted by the Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam Trust among the students of schools and the students were encouraged to read Sir Pon. Arunachalam's writings and teachings and remember this great National Hero.

At the function organized on September 28 at Galle Face Hotel, there will be speeches in English, Sinhala and Tamil paying tributes to Sir Pon. Arunachalam.

The Guests of Honour at this function will be Justice Shirani Bandaranayake and Hon. Justice C. V. Wigneswaran. The keynote speech will be delivered by Sam Wijesinha, Retired Secretary General of Parliament.

Prof. K. Sivathamby (Professor Emeritus of the University of Jaffna) and Professor 'Navukkarasar' So. Sathyaseelan of Tamil Nadu will be the other speakers. The function will commence with invocation songs by students of Colombo Ramanathan Hindu Ladies' College. V. Kailasapillai, Chairman of the Trust will preside.

S. P. Samy, J. M. Swaminathan and Sega Nagendra (Vice Chairman of the Trust) will pay floral tributes to the portrait of the late Sir Pon. Arunachalam.

The Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam Trust has also made plans to publish books in Sinhala, Tamil and English, on the life of Sir Pon. Arunachalam, which will be distributed among school children and others. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has donated Rs. 500,000 to the Trust towards its projects.
