by Rajmi Manatunga The Highways Ministry has decided to extend the Marine Drive, the road running parallel to the coastal railway line, to reduce traffic congestion in the Capital. Highways Ministry Secretary S. Amarasekere told the Daily News they have already commenced work on the road with Government funds. "We are planning to extend the existing incomplete marine drive from Wellawatte so that it will ease the traffic congestion created by the large number of vehicles entering Colombo every day. Construction work is under way to extend the drive from Wellawatte to Kollupitiya," he said. However, the Secretary said the extension of the drive beyond Kollupitiya would take some time since the Ministry will have to deal with a large number of land acquisition cases. "Once the road is extended to Kollupitiya, we will have to wait until the problems regarding land acquisition are sorted out. However, the Ministry is ready to carry the project forward step by step whenever possible," he said. |
