12th Asian Junior VB c'ships:

Lankan junior women spikers win easily

by Bernard Perera

Sri Lanka junior women spikers coasted to a comfortable 3 sets to nil victory over Maldives in their opening game of the 12th Asian Junior Womens Volleyball Championships which began at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium yesterday.

The scores were 25-11, 25-7 and 25-10.

Lankan spikers got off to a flying start in the first set taking a 3 point lead in the first few minutes. But the Maldivians fought back, and cut down the lead scoring two points.

At this stage Lankan lasses giving no room for their opponents to collect points went ahead to take a firm lead. Maldivian girls could never get closer to the Lankan total and finished the set at 25- 11.

Second set saw another good performance from the local team going on to collect six points before their opponents got any. At this stage the visitors fought back gallantly scoring 5 points against two from Lankans.

But Lankan skipper Irosha and Isanka proved that they are not easy to get away. With good spiking took control of the set to make it 2-0 (25-7). Lankans knowing that it was not a hard game played coolly and the Maldivian still could not cope up with the pace of local's spiking.

This saw the Maldivian lose this set too with the score reading (25-10) and Sri Lanka taking the match at 3 sets to nil.

It was a game dominated by Irosha and left-handed Isanki. They had the fullest support from others. In another game Korea too came up with fine three sets to nil victory against Australia. The only set Aussies gave a fight was the first where they ended at 25-21. The other sets finished as 25-15, 25-17. China a strong contender for the title had to fight all the way to overcome Thailand also a strong team.

China was stretched to the fourth set. The Chinese spikers put up a fine show in the following three sets 25-22, 25-22 and 25-12 to take the match at four sets to one.
