Sivakumaran received constant death threats - EPDP Coordinating Secretary

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

The EPDP yesterday pointed the accusing finger at the LTTE for the killing of its Jaffna and Puttalam District Organiser Thambithurai Sivakumaran.

Co-ordinating Secretary of the EPDP Nelson Edirisinghe yesterday charged the LTTE for having killed their senior member in order to prevent their terrorist nature being exposed to the international community through the Sri Lankan Courts.

Edirisinghe who is also the Co-ordinating Secretary to EPDP leader Douglas Devandanda said that Sivakumaran was receiving constant death threats from LTTE since he was the complainant in the case filed against them by the EPDP on the role by the LTTE in rigging the North East poll. The election petition in this connection was close to being heard before the Supreme Court, he said.

Police said Sivakumaran was shot dead by an alleged pistol gang of the LTTE on September 18 in front of his home while he was returning home on his pushbike with his daughter from the EPDP office in Puttalam. The killers had opened fire from a motorbike, police said.

Puttalam police have already conducted several raids under SSP Upali Ranasinghe in order to trace the killers.

Edirisinghe said the LTTE had rigged North East elections to consolidate their position through the Tamil National Alliance. "The TNA won the election by the grace of LTTE terrorism," he said.

Edirisinghe said, "Although this is the 160th EPDP member to have been slained by the LTTE, it is very clear that the motive behind the killing of Sivakumaran was to prevent their exposure to the world through a Court of law in Sri Lanka as a terrorist organisation."

"That's why we request the international community to step up action to stop these brutal killings," he said.
