Defence Ministry awaits truce monitors report by Ranil Wijayapala The Defence Ministry is awaiting the truce monitors report on the alleged military build up by the LTTE in the Trincomalee district to decide on what steps should be taken to remove any possible threat on the Trincomalee harbour, Defence Secretary Cyril Herat told the Daily News yesterday. Herat said the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has not yet submitted their report on the complaint made by the Ministry requesting the SLMM to inquire and report to the Ministry about the available information on LTTE camps in the Trincomalee district. "We are expecting that the SLMM would submit their report soon", he added. Acting Head of the SLMM, Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News that they have not yet completed inquiries as they have not been able to visit three places in the jungle areas of the Trincomalee district as indicated in the report. "We will be handing over the report soon after the inquiries are completed", Haukland added. Asked whether there is information about any new LTTE camps, Haukland said the 'problem is not as big as it was expected'. He said that there are some 'installations' by the LTTE in some of the areas visited by the truce monitors. "Most of them are check points. Check points and camps are two different things", Haukland added. Haukland said the LTTE was claiming that those installations were located within their territory. Chief of Defence Staff and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri after assuming duties at his new post as the Chief of Joint Operation Headquarters also admitted that there is a threat to the Trincomalee harbour. However, he said the Security Forces were ready to face any situation. |
