LTTE ready for meeting on Wednesday

by Ranil Wijayapala

The LTTE has informed the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) yesterday that they are ready to have the twice postponed meeting between them and the Security Forces Chiefs in Batticaloa next Wednesday, SLMM Acting Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News last night.

The LTTE conveyed this message to the SLMM following Batticaloa and Amparai district Political Chief E Kausalyan's arrival in Batticaloa from Kilinochchi on Thursday.

"We appreciate the move by the LTTE to fix a date for the meeting as we really need this meeting to take place", Haukland added.

He said the Security Forces have also agreed to have the meeting on Wednesday.

"We are making arrangements for the meeting," Haukland added.

The SLMM Chief prior to leaving for Oslo fixed this meeting between the Sri Lanka Army and the LTTE leaders in Batticaloa to discuss the security situation in the district as a number of killings were reported in Batticaloa in recent months.

However, the meeting was postponed twice the second time indefinitely as the LTTE leaders in Batticaloa - Amparai district flew to Kilinochchi to have a discussion with their leaders.

Norwegian Special Peace Envoy Erik Solheim also urged the LTTE to put an end to the killings by the LTTE.

The LTTE withdrew from the routine meetings they had with the Security Forces Chiefs in the East in June this year accusing the Security Forces of harbouring the breakaway leader Karuna.

However, the Security Forces and the Government flatly denied the allegation by the LTTE and urged the LTTE to have a face to face meeting with them to discuss the situation without making false allegations.

There were fighting between the cadres supporting the breakaway leader Karuna and the Wanni LTTE cadres in the uncleared areas in Batticaloa in the last two weeks.
