The preliminary rounds of the light of Asia Contest 2004 organised annually by the English Literary Activities Division of the Colombo YMBA are being held at its headquarters in Borella. Over 900 contestants are participating in this year's contest, which is an increase compared to previous years. There are 12 groups comprising basic division to senior division from ages of over eight to under 21 years, a press release issued by the YMBA states. Twelve finalists, each from 12 groups will be selected and awarded trophies, souvenirs and certificates. Those who come first in each group will be competing for the best all rounder Challenge Cup presented by former Vice President of Colombo YMBA, Sidat Sri Nandalochana in memory of his father, the late D.N.W. de Silva. This will be awarded by chief guest Parinda Ranasinghe, former Chief Justice at the prize awarding ceremony on October 9 at 2.30 p.m. at the Colombo YMBA, Borella. The Colombo YMBA has been conducting Dhamma and Abhidhamma examinations in the English medium since 1948 for local and foreign students. The number of local students who apply to sit this examination through the institution in which they study such as Dhamma school have been increasing annually. This examination is in three levels, namely Junior (Part 1 and 2), Senior (Part 1 and 2) and Diploma. The Sadhuwardena Challenge Shield will be awarded to the local school with best results at the award ceremony. |
