Peace village at Illukpitiya, a beacon of hope for country - PM

Message from Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse on the completion today of phase one of Sri Lanka's first Peace Village in Illukpitiya - a project launched by Business and Professional Women (Sri Lanka). "It is with immense pleasure that I send this message on an occasion, which I believe, is unique in many ways.

The successful completion of phase one of Sri Lanka's first Peace Village is entirely due to a band of dedicated and enterprising women members of Business and Professional Women (Sri Lanka).

At a time when terror and despair stalk countless thousands throughout the world, peace has become an increasingly rare and precious goal.

More and more people across the boundaries of race, colour and political conviction see the need for peace as the way to progress, both individual and national.

All of us in Sri Lanka, whatever our ethnicity, religion, profession or social status, have been for decades beset by these forces - terror and its consequence, despair. See page 18

PM at Peace Village

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse will hand over 30 houses to the most deserving families at Ilukpitiya in Medirigiriya today at a ceremony at 2.30 pm.

This is the first set of houses coming within the "Peace Village" under aegis of Business and Professional Women (Sri Lanka).

The total number of houses to come at the "Peace Village" is 230 and these are constructed with the support they receive from the donors, philanthropists and well-wishes who appreciate their project.

The B & P Women has chosen Ilukpitiya for their project after considering several options at hand as they had found the families within the boarder village most deserving in many aspects. They really needed the assistance of this nature for a good living.

In this context, the setting up of a Peace Village in Illukpitiya, an area that has experienced for too long the miseries of both warfare and poverty, is beacon that would give hope to its own community and further, I trust, be an inspiration for all those who wish to serve our country.

I extend my sincere congratulations to the office bearers and members of the Business and Professional Women (Sri Lanka) and I believe that this is but the first Phase in a successful and enduring programme that is of intrinsic value to the entire country."
