Emirates SkyCargo flags two new freighter routes

Emirates SkyCargo has announced during the 22nd International Air Cargo Forum and Exposition being held in Bilbao, a north-eastern Spanish city, that it is set to start offering dedicated cargo freighter services to Johannesburg, South Africa's commercial capital, and Lahore, the second largest city in Pakistan and an important industrial centre.

Both scheduled freighter services will commence on 1st October. The Johannesburg route will be operated by a dedicated Boeing 747-400F with a capacity of 124 tonnes, and Lahore will be served by a Boeing 747-200F with a payload of 100 tonnes.

The new service to Johannesburg marks Emirates SkyCargo's first African freighter route, supplementing the current 182 tonnes of belly-hold capacity in the airline's Airbus A340-300 double daily services and boosting Emirates SkyCargo's capacity to more than 300 tonnes of cargo per week. The freighter will return from the city via Nairobi.

It is expected to meet growing demand from the South African economy for industrial goods, specifically machinery, components, spare parts and electronics. From Nairobi perishables such as fresh flowers, vegetables and fish will wing their way to international markets, helping to satisfy multicultural European palates.

The Dubai-Lahore freighter service, offering unbeatable tonnage and volume to the city, will return via Taipei and Dhaka. Currently, Emirates SkyCargo offers 100 tonnes of belly-hold capacity in the Boeing 777 passenger service that serves Lahore four times a week.

The new service will help fuel industrial production and is ideal for goods that cannot be carried in the belly-hold due to weight, volume or dimensional restrictions.

It will make possible timely supply of capital goods such as oil-well equipment, electronic items and computers, machinery for the cottage and textile industries, raw materials for the textile industry and advanced surgical equipment.

Last year the Emirates freighter fleet of five contributed 30 per cent or US $196 million, of the airline's total cargo revenue of US $653 million. The Emirates SkyCargo route network spans the globe, covering 77 destinations in 54 countries on five continents.

Currently Emirates SkyCargo's freighter fleet serves busy trade routes, also Emirates' passenger destinations, such as New York, Milan, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Amman, Istanbul, Kuwait, Mumbai, Chennai, Dhaka, Bangkok, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. The seven cargo-only destinations served by freighters include: Budapest, Liege, Gothenburg, Amsterdam, Bangalore, Dalian and Taipei.
