Horton Place shooting:

Second victim dies in hospital

by Sarath Malalasekera and Malmi Sellahannadi

Mathew Gunatilleke, who was seated in the car next to Wijendra Peters alias 'G boy' when the latter was killed near a filling station in Horton Place on Sunday morning, died yesterday at the Colombo National Hospital, Colombo Crime Division Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda said.

Peters whom police described as a former hard drug dealer, was shot dead on Sunday morning by two unidentified gunmen using a T56 and a 9 mm revolver, Police said.

The special police unit who conducted investigations on the spot assisted by the Government Analyst and an Acting Colombo Magistrate recovered several spent bullets at the scene of the incident.

Earlier investigations directed by Colombo South Senior SP Gamini Seneviratne revealed that the deceased, Wijendra Peters had come in his vehicle bearing number WP JG 0393 to pump petrol at Horton Place Colombo. While moving towards Colombo two gunmen had fired at Peters killing him on the spot.

DIG Wickremaratne had deployed a special police squad to trace the threewheeler in which the assailants had escaped immediately after the shooting. The Police believe this is a contract killing by a rival group of underworld gang leaders. Meanwhile, The magisterial inquiry into the fatal shooting of the two persons at Horton Place on Sunday was held yesterday in Colombo.
