Providing jobs welcome than training At last there is relief to many frustrated youth of our country. Providing jobs to unemployed graduates would be welcome by every citizen of this country. The plight of these graduates was pathetic to say the least. There were graduates applying for peons jobs without disclosing they have a university degree. They knew that such disclosure would have been a disqualification. Now that this problem is solved, those who are responsible for their training carry an enormous responsibility. The quality of service in the public sector in another couple of years will depend mostly on the performance of these graduates. We all know how the public sector performs at present. Any further deterioration in the productivity in the country would have disastrous consequences. According to some sources more than 3,000 unemployed graduates have a 1st class. However, it should be accepted that the majority of the unemployed graduates were those who could not secure employment facing a competitive interview. If anyone is of the view that they can make this youth productive with a few computer classes and English lessons then they are sadly mistaken. It is therefore necessary that sufficient funds are found to train these graduates properly. NELUM JAYADEWA - Ratmalana. The Government has decided to issue National Identify Cards (NICs), for those who do not possess them, either having been lost or misplaced. This is a very wise move to prevent impersonation, specially when casting votes at General Elections. But, certain politicians are against such move, because they are unable to get their stooges to cast votes belonging to others by fraudulent means. NIC is not only important in casting votes, but for purposes of personal identity. Every citizen of Sri Lanka must possess his Identity Card to establish his identity, whenever it becomes necessary to do so. Therefore, from many points of view, NIC is a must for those domiciled in Sri Lanka. As there is ample time for a forthcoming General Election, those who do not possess NICs can apply and obtain them in time and the Government has made provision for it. The Government must take quick action in the distribution of NICs. Those who do not possess their NICs at present, can be found out from the householder's lists available with the Grama Niladari of the area, where that cage meant for it has been left blank. Dishonesty must be disqualified. A. R. Bringing back the death penalty In the past there have been many articles written regarding the above subject. The Government was contemplating on the subject. Whenever there is horrendous murders take place in the country we are compelled to think that these individuals must be brought to justice and the highest available punishment by law must be implemented. However, after a while, we all forget about the subject until another one of these crimes takes place. Recently there were articles regarding the crime statistics in our country. We have to question ourselves why there is so much crime committed. I am sure there are so many reasons, but no reason is valid for an individual to commit murder, rape or any other crime. Our education, religions in our country and our culture teach us to be law abiding honest and good citizens. We Sri Lankans are generally friendly, tolerant and a helpful lot. However our culture and level of tolerance has changed so much during the past 2-3 decades due to globalization, internal conflicts and various other factors. The Government must take this as an agenda and make sure the mandatory death penalty is brought back. This is a necessary evil. The person who commits crime must know that the highest level of law is available to punish all those who commit crime against humanity. The death penalty must be brought back without further delay.
