NSB grants Rs. 50m for thousand tanks project

The National Savings Bank (NSB) has granted a sum of Rs.50 million to the Agriculture Ministry towards implementing the Government's Dahasak Maha Wev (thousand tanks) project in view of the significant progress achieved by the project to revive country's ancient tanks.

The NSB General Manager Eastman Narangoda handed over a cheque to the value of Rs.50 million to Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake at his Ministry on September 9, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

The NSB GM has told the Minister that the NSB while engaging in financial activities is also implementing various projects to uplift the living conditions of people. Therefore, the NSB which firmly believes that Dahasak Maha Wev project will facilitate to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the rural community decided to grant this money for this project.

Narangoda has noted that the Board of Directors of the NSB and all its employees are very keen on this nation building exercise and willing to extend their fullest cooperation to turn this project into a success, he said.

The spokesman said the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) under its ambitious "Dahasak Maha Wevs Project' has designed to revive and rehabilitate 10,000 wev throughout the country during the next four years. Of this, total 1000 wevs will be renovated during the year 2004.

He said each tank covers 20 acres and nearly 10 farmer families are dependant from a single tank.

Therefore, this project will benefit a large number of farmer families. A total of 300,000 families will be benefitted with the completion of the entire project to rehabilitate 10,000 tanks during the next four years.

The Ministry has already formulated all estimates to complete the renovation of all these 1000 tanks by the end of this year. The Ministry has set up two farmer organisations and two Wev societies in relation to each tank to be renovated.

These farmer organisations have been given legal permission to perform their duties following the instructions issued by the directors and commissioners of the District Agrarian Services Department, he said.
