Tritel 'coin jams' help drought victims in Maha Kanadarawa

Tritel Services (Pvt) Ltd., distributed dry rations among 500 drought-affected families in the Maha Kanadarawa village off Anuradhapura on September 5.

Last week's donation worth Rs. 250,000 was partly funded from 'jammed coins' collected by the company over one year from 3000 Tritel payphones.

Tritel is planning to continue similar charity programs in the future, he said.

"Coin jams are a problematic issue for Tritel as it is for payphone operators around the world. More often than not, coin jams are caused intentionally," two per cent of Tritel's payphones go out of order due to vandalism, said Tritel's Regional Manager Western Province Ushantha Tilakarathna.

"We have taken steps to reduce this occurrence by checking each of our payphones at least once or twice a day. This is done by over 100 Area Technical Officers around the country. Tritel has a high maintenance cost, due to vandalism. However, it is impossible to have a fool proof system of preventing someone who wants to intentionally 'jam' a phone in the hope of making a free phone call," he said.

Tritel Services (Pvt) Ltd., which commenced operations in July 1997, is backed by Sri Indrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company which has invested approximately US $ 20 million in Sri Lanka's telecommunication industry. As a provider of essential telecommunications to the less affluent segments of the population, Tritel focuses on servicing rural areas, where about 40 per cent of its payphone network is located.
