Aussies will have it easy Elmo Rodrigopulle reporting from England Test and one-day champions Australia will begin their quest for the ICC Champions Trophy with a game against the USA and they should not have any difficulty in stuffing the Americans. This game will be played at the Rose Bowl. The Aussies led by the quick scoring Ricky Ponting, who was elected captain of the ICC Test and one-day teams, will take the field with the best balanced outfit in this tournament. The Aussies, although they failed to make an impression when this tournament was previously played in Sri Lanka, are strongly tipped to carry away the trophy. They have batsmen ideally suited for the 'cowboy game' and particularly interesting to watch would, be the skipper, Hayden, Gilchrist, Martyn, Symonds and Lehmann. If the openers Hayden and Gilchrist get off to a strong start, then Ponting and especially Symonds could build on this and steer the Aussies to a huge score. The bowling too is quite penetrative with McGrath who is back to full fitness to lead the attack which also has Jason Gillespie, Kasproviz and Brett Lee with Hogg for spin support. The fielding as usual would be top class. As for the Americans, they would not be able to do much and if the Americans bat first then the chances are that the game would not go the full distance. The Americans would be hoping that former West Indian Clayton Lambert would be in the runs. He is the only batsman capable of standing up to the Aussie attack. |
