The Government has decided to import rice from Pakistan and India within the next two weeks to reduce the increasing prices in the local market, Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said yesterday. Making a statement over Rupavahini, the Minister said that Government expects to reduce the price of a kilo of Samba rice and Kekulu to Rs. 35 and Rs. 28 respectively after importing rice from Pakistan and India. In addition the Minister said the Government is also taking steps to reduce the price of sugar by Rs. 5 within the next few weeks after importing sugar from Brazil. The Government is also having discussions with the Indian Government to reduce the escalating price of milk powder by Rs. 20. |
