Reiyukai, a Japanese Buddhist spiritual institution has given its consent to invest Rs. 400 million to construct an international spiritual centre in the western side of the Chaukandi stupa, which was erected to mark the place where the Buddha met his first five deciples. According to Uttar Pradesh tourism officials, the project draft suggested to develop the centre as the place for international spiritual learning keeping in view the proximity of Sarnath with Varanasi which is a world famous pilgrimage and tourist destination. The centre could become a major destination for the tourists with additional amenities like a meditation centre, an exhibition gallery, restaurants with limited accommodation and facilities. A few years ago Uttar Pradesh came out with a Master Plan to develop Sarnath. It was Anagarika Dharmapala who first visited Sarnath. |
