Garbage problem irks City residents

Contrary to City Fathers' claims that Colombo is 'clean', residents say they find piles of garbage in certain areas. Residents question as to how many times garbage is cleared in the City by those entrusted with this task.

Deputy Mayor Azath Sally told the Daily News that City garbage clearance has been outsourced to two private companies. "They are doing a good job. We have not received any complaints," the Deputy Mayor said.

Lalith Wickramaratne, Director, Solid Waste of the Colombo Municipality also said there was no garbage problem in the City. If anyone says that uncollected garbage can be seen at any place, it could be an isolated incident.

"If we receive any information we will act swiftly," Wickramaratne told the Daily News. He added that 625 tons of garbage is being collected per day. He however added that workmen constructing several buildings in Slave Island had dumped rubble by the railway line.

These piles of rubble appear overnight but the Municipality has been clearing it regularly using machinery.

Attempts by the Daily News to contact officials of the two private firms engaged in garbage collection failed as their offices were closed yesterday.
