Focus on Agro based Economy: Farmer delegation to study Indian expertise by Irangika Range Hatton National Bank (HNB) will organise a farmer study tour to India as there is greater focus in the country to develop the agro based economy. The effort will contribute to develop the rural agricultural economy. Thirteen farmers, identified from selected areas such as Tissamaharama, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Mannar, Moneragala, Buttala, Embilipitiya, Nochchiyagama and Nuwara Eliya will be participating on a 10-day tour. The Chairman and Managing Director of the HNB Rienzie Wijetilleke said "this is the second time that the bank is organising this tour under the Gami Pubuduwa Loan Scheme," the first team which included 10 farmers went to China in 1989. "The farmer delegation has been selected on their successes, dedication to work and well loan repayment. India is famous for its best and successful agriculture practices and the local farmers have an opportunity to improve the knowledge as well as recognise modern technologies. The tour aimed at covering various agri business sectors such as tissue culture for banana cultivation, processing of dehydrated bananas, cardamoms and vanilla cultivation, organic mango cultivation, milk processing and broiler farming," Wijetilleke said. Wijetilleke said that the Gami Pubuduwa Scheme has lent over Rs. 3 billion through 75,000 projects to-date to the agriculture sector. "The bank which achieved 93 percent recovery rate from the scheme. Believes that the, farmers can gain better cultivation knowledge from various important agricultural related programs in India. Farmers will tour to Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore and Ooty during 10 days," he said. |
