Sri Lankan women cricketers face tough task today

by Chris Dhambarage

The Sri Lanka women's cricket team will face a tough task when they confront the visiting Australian cricket team in the Singer Sri Lanka first one-day international at the R. Premadaasa Stadium today.

Sri Lanka will be fielding a new look side under the captaincy of Sandamali Dolawatte with Nihal Kodituwakku taking over as the coach for the series. Kodituwakku who is in charge of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation has been re-appointed to this post having earlier coached the team during the previous World Cup held in New Zealand.

However, the Sri Lankan team led by Sandamaki Dolawatte are a confident lot having enjoyed a great amount of success in their previous two tournaments against Pakistan and the West Indies.

Sri Lanka had a highly successful series against the West Indies where they made a clean sweep winning all seven one-day internationals and also routed Pakistan by the same margin during their series in Pakistan.

The President of the Women's Cricket Association Mrs. Gwen Herat said that this series is quite a significant one and could be a good preparation for the next World Cup to be staged in South Africa next year.

Meanwhile Sri Lankan coach Nihal Kodituwakku expressed his confidence saying that the present outfit is studded with a number of good all rounders and are confident of putting up a good performance. He said that the home conditions should give the players the added advantage and will be banking heavily on the spinners to deliver the goods.

The series will begin today in the distinguished presence of His Excellency David Binns, High Commissioner for Australia and Mohan de Silva President Sri Lanka Cricket at the R. Premadasa Stadium. The series will continue until September 13 with four one-day internationals and one three-day Test match.
