Over 100 competitors for racing meet at Pannala

Over 100 entries have been received for the inaugural Racing meet of the Asian Motor Racing Club organised with the support and assistance of the Motor Racing Association which is expected to be worked off at the Pannala International Racing Track at Pannala on Sunday, September 5th commencing at 10 a.m. The official practices to determine the grid positions will be held on Saturday 4th September 2004.

Rohan de Silva who himself will be participating in this meet in the formula events and the super car events and one of the king pins behind the move to have a motor racing club with international projections said that all arrangements have been finalised to have the timings done by Indian experts on this field similar to international formula racing.

There has been a good run on the 20,000 tickets printed with already 12,000 tickets been sold. Over a 100 potential sponsors have been invited and will be accommodated in the Specially Arranged Centre Island area to give them the best possible view and to rope them to support the races to achieve higher levels of performance and participation.

Rohan de Silva said that the drivers briefing will be held at the Sports Auditorium, at 420, Bauddhalaoka Mawatha, Colombo 7 this week. Both officials and drivers briefing will be carried out at the international level on Power Point Presentations.

Rohan de Silva said that a total of 11 events will be worked off commencing at 10 a.m. and the final event will be at 1.10 p.m. The distribution of awards will take place at 1.50 p.m. at the track itself. A special feature is that the filming of the race meet has been arranged with special arrangements to check the starting positions and accidents so that the judges can take correct decisions if there are such issues.

There will be also a special area demarcated for 'Stop Go' penalty by the officials. The racing meet will start off with the Group SL-N Event for Ford Laser/Mazda one make event which will feature drivers like Susantha Gunawardena, Prassanna de Alwis, Dilshard Hamddon. Sisira Gunasekera, Sajjaad Zuhair, Rohan Fernando who will be among the 12 who have entered this event.

The event No. 2 which will be Group N-Mini 1000 cc which will be at 10.20 a.m. will have top drivers like Kandan Parameswaran, Hafiz Cader, Sarathchandra Pathirana, Samantha Gunawardena, Ravi Abeysekera and Rohith de Silva among 12 who will be in the fray.

Event No. 3 will be Group SL-N 10 Kg/hp upto and including 14 Kg/hp will see a good battle between Kahawatte's Nihal Premasiri, Buddhika de Silva, Dhammika Pieris, Rajeewa Abeywardene, Samin Attanayake, Rohan Wijeratne, Mansur Hassen, Damian Gunawardena, and a total number of 16 drivers will battle it out here.

There will be a fiery battle in the Group SL-A Super Cars event and the big names who will fight for supremacy are Mushtaq Ahamed, Rizvi Faroup, Rohan de Silva, Dinesh Deheragoda, Reyaz Farook, Dan Dissanayake, Ravi Mayadunne, Dilantha Malagamuwa, Mansur Hassen, Nishan Weerasooriya, Nalin D. Perera, Mahinda Premarathne, Devaka Amarasuriya, Carmen Thenuwara and many others.

A total of 18 competitors will run in the Group SL-F Formula Ford event and leading the bunch will be maestro Rohan de Silva himself and providing the challenge for him will be Dilshad Hamdoon, Dinesh Jayawardena, Rizvi Farouk, Shashika Dias, Romani de Silva, Tharindu Lokuge, Buddhika de Silva, Zackie Ismail, Dilantha Malagamuwa, Upul Perera, Sanjaya Dissanayake, Niroshan Pereira, Ravi Mayadunne, S.A. Harsha S. De Silva.

Ten drivers will be in the Novices event for Group N 1400cc upto 1600cc event. The local racing world will look for the emergence of new stars from this event.

Event for Group SL-N 6.0 Kg/HP upto 10.0 Kg/HP will see a battle between the Hondas and other vehicles and in the tussle will be Dinesh Jayawardena, Upul Perera, Elly Gherson, Dinesh Senanayake, Rizvi Farouk, Zakie Ismail, Shirendra Lawrence, Devaka Amarasuriya, Sheran Fernando, Israq Wahab, Siddi Farook, Tharindu Lokuge, Kapila Jayasundera, Thushara Hemachandra among many others.
