Special police squad solves contract killings

by Sarath Malalasekera

A special Police squad attached to the Police Headquarters Action Plan program has solved a number of killings in Colombo District recently and recovered two vehicles stolen following the arrest of two underworld gang leaders.

Following the arrest of underworld gang leader Nishantha Dias of Kurukulawa, Ragama, the special team was able to solve the killing of Ranil Nishantha Dias of Modera on July 30, 2004.

The killings of H. Chanaka Chaturanaga of Totalanga on August 5, Mohamed Razar Deen of Kadawatha, Mahara on August 7, Dinesh Perera of Kotahena on August 29 and D.N. Joseph Bandara of Wattala on August 23 were also solved.

All these killings were contract jobs, said DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne in charge of the Action Plan. These underworld leaders were also involved in bank robberies, DIG Wickremaratne said.

The two vehicles recovered were a Mitsubishi car WPGD 7329 and a Mitsubishi van WPHK 7440. The special police team is investigating to ascertain whether these two vehicles had been used to commit any major crimes.

Investigations revealed that the underworld gangleaders used automatic weapons for their operations even in broad daylight. The special team has been deployed to arrest the 'king pin' of these operations who is believed to be living in the Western Province.

Seventeen special teams were detailed from the three DIG Ranges to combat the increasing crimes in the country, DIG Wickremaratne said. This special unit is working round the clock.

SP A. Karunaratne is conducting investigations for the Action Plan Programme assisted by ASP V. Indran and Inspector H. Samudrajeewa.

DIG Wickremaratne appealed to the public to provide information regarding any criminal activities on Fax number 2399947, telephone 4736737 hot lines 2441147.
