Meeting with Inter Universities TU Joint committee on anomalies

A special meeting was held at the Ministry of Education with representatives of the Inter Universities Trade Union Joint Committee on August 31. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Education and the Chairman of the University Grants Commission. The main issue discussed was the implementation of the recommendations of the final report prepared by the Sri Lanka Institute of Development and Administration on ratification of salary anomalies for the Inter Universities staff i.e. Academic Executive Officers, non Academic staff.

The Secretary explained about the detailed discussions the Ministry has had with the Secretary to the Treasury and other officials of the Ministry of Finance to obtain their concurrence in order to implement these recommendations without delay.

A letter addressed to the Chairman/UGC by the Ministry of Finance yesterday states that the Treasury is pleased to implement the proposal of SLIDA on this subject upon the receipt of the recommendations of the "Interim Commission on Administration" established by Her Excellency the President under Article 33 of the Constitution appointed to examine the salary anomalies of the public sector. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance together with the UGC is deeply committed to implementing the revised salaries for the entire Universities community without delay.

The Inter University Trade Union Joint Committee wanted a written assurance from the Ministry of Education that the salary anomalies rectification will be completed before end September 2004. The Secretary will once again discuss with the Treasury and the "Interim Commission on Administration" and write to the Joint Trade Union Committee on Thursday (2nd September) giving the position, states an Education Ministry press release.

Meanwhile, a special meeting has been arranged with Tissa Devendra and the Interim Commission on Administration, with the Inter Universities Trade Union Joint Committee today, September 1 at the BMICH to discuss the salary anomaly issue, states the press release.
