US university helps school's development

Kelaniya Group Correspondent

WPC Member U. George Perera, said at a ceremony held at Vidyaloka Vidyalaya, Ihala-Karagahamuna, Kadawata that if teachers reformed their duties well there would be no discrimination in education, between schools in the town and rural areas.

'A majority of parents in rural areas try to send their children to schools in towns. The reason behind this may be that they are under the impression, that if they admit their children to town schools they could attain a high position in society by gaining a good education in the town schools. Time had come to wipe out these outdated beliefs and ideas, George Perera said. We should get together and launch a program to improve and uplift the school. In this connection Dharmapriya Weeratunga's daughter Miss Samudra Weeratunga who is now studying in the Oregon University, USA has sent to this school for its repairs Rs. 15,000.

Undergraduate Brian Kugal has come to Sri Lanka to hand over this money, on behalf of the USA University. That students of the University has promised to send more and more contributions to improve this school in future too. He also appealed to the parents of the school to come forward and help the Principal of the school to meet the urgent needs of the schools.

He paid a special tribute to Miss Samudura Weeratunga who has set an example to the local students too by this contribution.

Principal of the school Mrs. N.M.J.I. Coorey while thanking the undergraduates of the University of Oregon USA said, children will be isolated if we do not change our education to face the challenges of the modern world.

Undergraduate of Oregon University USA Brian Kugal said that he was very happy to visit Sri Lanka for the first time to hand over this contribution organised by a member of Alpha Tan Omega organisation of the Oregon University. More and more contributions will follow to improve this school in future too.
