Duminda Silva alleged rape case : Another suspect produced before Court

by Sarath Malalasekera

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) yesterday produced Mohamed Nizam Hansil Irsaard before the Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena in connection with investigations into the alleged rape of an underaged girl by UNP Western Provincial Councillor Duminda Silva.

K. A. D. Sarath of the NCPA producing the suspect in court said that according to the statement of the underaged victim the suspect is alleged to have taken her to a hotel in Mount Lavinia on the day of the incident.

But the suspect had denied the allegations against him.

"We have to record a statement from a certain Dilkushan in connection with the incident, the NCPA officer said.

Gihan Kodagoda who appeared with Ms. Wathsala Perera for the suspect objected to the NCPA officer's application for remand and submitted to court that the entire story against his client was concocted.

After submission by the Officer of the NCPA and the Defence Counsel the Judge granted bail for the suspect in a sum of Rs. 5000 cash and a bond of Rs. 100,000 with a surety. The suspect was ordered to appear in Court on September 7, 2004.
