Sri Lankan turns out automated water gauge meter

For the first time, a Sri Lankan had turned out an Automated Electronic meter for measuring water levels which can gauge the water level of any reservoir and instantly feed back the details to the Irrigation Department Head Office.

M. P. S. Fernando, an Assistant Research Officer attached to the Energy Section of the Irrigation Department has created this unique instrument locally and which costs less than one third of the present cost of such mechanism, an Irrigation Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

This equipment is a result of a long-standing experiment and unremitting perseverance of Fernando over a period of ten years.

Due to efforts made by Fernando to turn out this equipment locally, he has been given the patent rights for this equipment. Therefore he hopes to manufacture this equipment locally in the future, he said.

Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Deputy Minister Bimal Ratnayake addressing the launching ceremony of this equipment held at the Irrigation Department Head Office recently said this is a unique event for which we can be proud of as a nation.

He said the manufacture of this equipment gives a key message to the country. "Our professionals and graduates should lay emphasis on this type of creations. This kind of officer should be held up as a model for the Government's nation-building exercise.

In many research activities and creations, technologists and researchers focus their attention on inventions which are based on high cost and high technology. They do not consider the suitability of such inventions to the present socio-economic situation. In such a situation, the creation of this low cost water level measuring meter is very important, he said.

The Deputy Minister said:" Fernando has been able to locally manufacture this water level measuring equipment at only one third of the cost of the imported meter currently used. This is a laudable effort to save the national wealth of a country like Sri Lanka. I personally and on behalf of the Ministry extend my heartfelt commendation to Fernando for his praiseworthy attempt.

As recommended, the Ministry will take steps to immediately assist Fernando in this venture through incentives and other assistance not to mention a well-earned promotions."
