Lanka to participate in 'World Food - Ukraine 2004 Trade Fair'

by Irangika Range

The Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) will organise Sri Lanka's participation at the "World Food-Ukraine 2004 Trade Fair" to promote the Ceylon tea brands as a quality product against other beverages in Ukraine from November 2 to 5.

SLTB official and former Sri Lanka Tea Commissioner in Russia, Upali Kahandawa said three local tea exporters including Bogawanthalawa Plantation Ltd, Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt) Ltd and Euro-Scan Exports Pvt Ltd will display their tea brands of Ceylon Tea Gardens, Impra and Mlesna at the booth," Kahandawa said.

Kahandawa said this is the major food and beverage trade fair held annually in Ukraine and the SLTB has been organising the Sri Lankan pavilion at the fair since 1997. "This will provide a good opportunity for local tea manufacturers and exporters to participate in the fair to popularise local pure tea brands in the Ukraine Market.

This is also considered an annual meeting place to observe the new technology, high quality and the latest developments in the tea sector.

Our participants can gain more benefits such as to strengthen the present business and to build new trade links in the Ukraine market and obtain first hand information on importers, distributors, packers, wholesalers, retailers, consumers, consumer preferences and market trends," he said.

"It is important to participate in the fair because Ukraine is the largest tea market for Sri Lanka. The fair provided a strong platform to negotiate and confirm orders in the last few years and local participants at the fair have earned over U$ 70 million in foreign exchange and new long-term orders each year.

The volume of the local tea market share recorded 55 percent in the Ukraine tea market while the value recorded between 65 and 70 percent.

The local Orthodox Tea is the most popular among the Ukraine people compared to CTC tea. Around 10,000 metric tonnes of tea are exported to Ukraine annually. This is approximately 3.5 percent of the total export volume in Sri Lanka," he said.

"Ukraine imports between 18,000 to 20,000 metric tonnes of tea and various Ceylon tea brands such as Batik, Dilmah, Impra, Akbar, Mlesna, Ceylon Tea Garden, Riston, Mabroc, Hyson, Hyleys and Jaf have a big demand in Ukraine," he said.

"SLTB opened the information discussion counter to provide trade fair information for participants," he said.
