Further impetus to expand business in the region: Siemens begins direct operations in Lanka by Sudarshana Perera Siemens, a worldwide business giant in electrical and electronics engineering commenced its direct operations in Sri Lanka yesterday with the setting up of a liaison office in Colombo "Siemens Lanka". The German based company also pledged to work closely with the government, local industry and business partners to make Sri Lanka a vibrant, progressive and modern nation while improving infrastructure and spurring economic growth. The company is also expected to play a key role in areas such as power, medical, information and communication and Automation and Control. Siemens through its Indian Office will transfer knowledge and expertise to develop the Sri Lankan market. Member of the Corporate Executive Committee, Siemens AG, Dr. Klaus Wucherer told a press briefing in Colombo yesterday that Sri Lanka has now been included on Siemens global map of operations and added that their Sri Lankan operations would provide a further impetus in expanding its business in the region. "We will operate through our new liaison office and five local partners such as Dimo Ltd, Bela Group, Nikini and Empire Ltd. The focus would be on strengthening our presence by enhancing sales and services force across the country. We have identified potential areas of growth in the infrastructure and industrial sectors in Sri Lanka", Wucherer said. "Siemens is strongly positioned to address the infrastructure needs of Sri Lanka by providing products and services for areas such as power, industry, building technology, telecommunication and transportation", he said. Managing Director, Siemens Ltd, India , Juergen Schubert said that India would play a facilitator role in Sri Lanka and added that it would use the strength of the entire network for the benefit of Sri Lankan customers. "Sri Lanka is emerging as an important market for Siemens in the Asian region and with the active support of Siemens India, we are confident of mirroring our success in the Sri Lankan market. Over the last few years, Siemens Indian operation has emerged as a major player in the global network of Siemens. Many products and solutions marketed globally are sourced from India's world class facilities", Schubert said. |
