EPRLF condoles on death of K. Balanadarajah

T. Sritharan in a condolence message on behalf of the EPRLF states:

"Balanadarajah Iyer who was gunned down at Pamankade, Colombo counts over 30 years in public life. He had been a politician as a local government member, a writer, a journalist and an independent thinker. He is a father of three and never hesitated to take up any challenge amidst risk whenever his conscience demanded to do so.

As a journalist he was once attached to 'Marithan' newspaper in the 70s and this Jaffna based regional paper highlighted vital information on the economic resources in the North and East. Comrade Bala's political life began with his association with EROS movement and because the editor of 'Tharkkeeham' newspaper in the early 80s. He was not only devoted to the cause of the Tamil people but, also stood for the emancipation of the oppressed class in the society. Bala was born as a son of Mr. and Mrs. Kandasamy Iyer of Urebu, Jaffna and had five sisters and one brother. This Kandasamy Iyer family fed and clothed those who left for waging war in the mid 70s. Their family had offered these assistance in spite of their own financial constructs. This they had done for the sake of the community.

The fascist type of violence which the Tigers use has cost the life of several leading people who fought for Tamil cause including Bala Iyer. Bala is the person who worked hard among poverty stricken masses in the North and East.

Today the Tamil community has become helpless in protecting such outstanding people. As long as those killings continue, there will be a question mark on the culture, tradition and values of the Tamil Community. We wholeheartedly express our propound sympathies on the death of our beloved Bala.

During his living days, he wrote mostly for the cause of the Tamil community. He raised his voice for the protection of democracy and human rights when they were threatened with.

We once again express our deep sympathies to the bereaved family members including his very young children and to the EPDP which party our comrade represented."
