Maheshwaran's remarks draw fire

by our Parliament Correspondents

Certain remarks made by UNP MP T. Maheshwaran against President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga drew fire from the Government benches causing pandemonium in the House yesterday morning.

It was minister and chief government whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle who first raised the issue referring to a remark made by Maheshwaran against the President. The incident took place soon after UNP MP Abdul Cader who is now in remand custody entered the House amidst the loud cheering of UNP MPs.

Minister Fernandopulle said it has now become a practice for Maheshwaran to make abusive statement against the President.

He is always making abusive remarks against the President. This must be stopped. He can't sling mud or use abusive words against the President who is the Head of State", said an angry Fernandopulle pointing the finger at Maheshwaran.

The minister also revealed that Maheshwaran had come seeking the Government's assistance for permission to import rice.

"Don't insult people like that, we also have many things to say about you. How you did business. We also can make accusation against you and hurl insults at you, a visibly angry Fernandopulle stated.
