Lokubandara told Parliament that the Supreme Court has determined that the Elections (Special Provision) Bill is consistent with the Constitution. The Bill seeks to make it compulsory for a voter to produce a valid identity document in proof of identity at election. Finance Amendment announcement: "I wish to announce to the Parliament the determination of the Supreme Court in respect of the Bill titled 'Finance Amendment', which is in view of the Cabinet of Ministers, urgent in the national interest and had been referred to the Supreme Court by Her Excellency the President in terms of Article 122(1) of the Constitution. The Court has determined that in terms of the Article 123(1) of the Constitution that neither the Bill as a whole nor any of its provisions are inconsistent with the Constitution. I order that the determination of the Supreme court be printed in the official report of today's proceedings," the Speaker said. |
