by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy Minister of Mahaweli Development, and Rajarata Development Maithripala Sirisena has decided to appoint a special committee to investigate into the incidents of misuse of and misdealings on Mahaweli lands and certain irregularities regarding the use of official homes of Mahaweli officers and employees. The Minister addressing Mahaweli Authority officials and employees at the Digana Mahaweli Village Holiday Resort Kundasale said that the late Gamini Dissanayake continued the implementation of the Mahaweli development scheme with good faith and dedication. But unfortunately they could not be satisfied with the present situation of that important project. It had been observed that many of those Mahaweli Authority officials had been kept away from the areas they are assigned. That situation had to be inquired into and remedial measures taken, he said. There were complaints of effecting underhand dealings involving Mahaweli Authority lands. Some houses allocated to Mahaweli officials and employees were being converted into private guest houses which was illegal. Mahaweli Authority lands and properties could not be entrusted to private individuals. He would appoint a committee to inquire into such irregularities with the view to take remedial measures. In order to make an institution viable and strengthen it, the dedication of employees was an important need. He called upon all employees to work with devotion and dedication. Minister Sirisena said that action would be taken to amend the Mahaweli Development Act giving more powers to it with the view to make it more effective and efficient. Secretary to the Ministry E. Abeywickrama and General Manager Mahaweli Authority Dr. A.M.U. Tennakoon were present. |
