Veteran journalist, author and politician Newton Seneviratne, the recent news editor of the Ravaya Newspaper passed away last morning (17) at the age of 64. Newton Seneviratne, who was a member of the Communist Party Central Executive Committee was conspicuous as a member of the CP students' organization, as the Deputy Secretary of the Youth Federation and the CP organizer of the Kesbewa electorate. From 1967 to 1977 he was a VC member in the Boralesgamua East Village Committee and in 1994 was elected to the Western Province Provincial Council to represent the United People's Front. After losing his job due to trade union activities Newton Seneviratne took to journalism holding the post of Deputy News Editor and subsequently the News Editor of "Aththa" newspaper. He gathered an enormous popularity by appearing in Lanka Press Council litigations. Seneviratne was also the first secretary of the Sri Lanka Professional Journalists' Association. Newton Seneviratne who was for some time the news editor of the "Dinakara" newspaper possessed a sound knowledge of laws relating to newspapers. As the head of the Sinhala Division of the Soviet Embassy, he completed a course of journalism in the Prague University of Chchoslovakia as well as a similar course in Russia. He was an external lecturer of the University of Colombo and authored four books. His remains now lie at his residence at 30/6, Rendawatta Road, Boralesgamuwa from where it will be taken in procession for last rites at the General cemetery, Godigamuwa, Maharagama on August 21 at 06.00 p.m. |
