by P. Krishnaswamy As reported exclusively in the Daily News last week, the distribution of rice to consumers at Rs. 27 per kg through CWE outlests islandwide will begin from today, a spokesman of the Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ministry told the Daily News. The first consignment of 30,000 kgs which arrived in Colombo yesterday from Muttur, Trincomalee, was unloaded at the CWE warehouse at McCallum Road to be prepared into 5 kg and 10 kg packets, the spokesman said. The packeted rice will be available in all CWE outlets in Colombo from today and in all other outlets throughout the island from tomorrow, he said. Consignments of rice will continue to arrive at CWE warehouses from rice producing areas, especially the Eastern province, under a scheme initiated last week by Minister of Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Jeyaraj Fdernandopulle, whereby the CWE will purchase rice directly from farmers and their agents and transport it to its outlets islandwide for being sold at cost. |
