10 best corporate citizen awards ceremony 2004 to promote Corporate Social Responsibility

by Irangika Range

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) will conduct the "10 Best Corporate Citizen Awards Ceremony 2004" to promote and raise awareness of the importance on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the business community.

The event will be held in concurrence with the CCC Annual Business Convention on October 14 at the Colombo Plaza. The CCC Annual Business Convention will continue till October 16.

Chairman of the convention sub committee, Prof. L.R. Watawala told a press briefing in Colombo last week that the aim of organising this awards ceremony is to advocate and encourage practising CSR in the country's business sector.

"Business people should consider their social responsibility not only the profit. This award will promote social acceptance of companies through ethically responsible behaviour and this will support those who are currently practising CSR in companies," Prof. Watawala said.

He said CCC would conduct the competition to select the best 10 corporate citizens under five main stakeholder groups such as environment, community relations, employee relations, customer relations and economic performance.

These groups will evaluate each applicant by giving positive and negative marks and the aggregate will provide the net score.

The collection and processing of data would be done by an independent organisation with the assistance of the CCC Secretariat. The decisions of the evaluation panel and panel of judges will be the final and binding upon all contestants, " he said.

"All private and public companies are eligible to take part and they should send applications in triplicate under the format provided together with news articles, photographs, annual reports, and other relevant information. The applications should cover a minimum of three stakeholder groups to enter the competition.

The "Best Corporate Citizen Award 2004 " will be granted to the top three corporates while certificates will be presented to the ten best corporate citizens. The CCC will present award certificates to the winners in each stakeholder category," he said.

"The environment group will look at positive programs such as pollution reductions, recycling, energy savings measures, beneficial products and negative measures such as level of pollution, emissions, fines, lawsuits, regulatory problems and other environmental hazards," he said.

"The community relations group will look at philanthropy and foundation or trust that the company has set up, yearly allocation of funds for social service projects, community service projects, educational outreach, scholarships, employee volunteerism, child and elder care programs while bribery, corruption, political lobbying are considered negative points.

The employee relations group will consider wages relative to industry, paying benefits, profit sharing, family friendly policies, safety, parental leave, team management, employee empowerment, employee share option or ownership schemes, union relations, employment of women, employment of disabled persons, labour department complaints, human rights and child labour, training expenditure, workforce reductions and employee injury statistics, " he said

The customer relations group will look at quality management programs, customer satisfaction measures, lawsuits, assisting small farm co-operatives and rural farmers and direct purchasing from farmers avoiding the middlemen while the economic performance category will consider the declaration of a reasonable dividend, bonus issues, rights issues, annual reporting, share price, paying taxes, total wages, donations and turnover.

Applicants are advised to obtain an official receipt when handing over the applications in triplicate on or before September 20.

Preliminary confirmation from companies consenting to provide details should be conveyed to the organisers by August 30.
