Export earnings from coconut, coconut-based products up 42% Export earnings from coconut and coconut based products have gone up by 42% during the first five months in 2004, according to the latest statistics from the Coconut Development Authority. The total earnings for non kernel products has gone up from Rs. 2,733 million to Rs. 3,216 million outperforming the 6% growth recorded last year. Export earnings from kernel products have gone up to Rs. 3,213 million making the total export income from coconut products Rs. 6,430 million up to May 2004. The main reason for this increase had been the better quality and harvest due to the favourable weather pattern which prevailed during the season and the ability to compete with India in the world market according to the officials of the Coconut Development Authority. Sri Lanka exports four categories of coconut products namely Kernel, Fibre, Shell and Non kernel which includes 22 categories. Exports of nine kernel products, coconut oil, desiccated coconut copra, fresh nuts, coconut milk, poonac, cream, milk powder, and defatted coconut alone has recorded this income making the income of desiccated coconut significant with Rs. 1,824 million, during the period. Desiccated coconut was exported to 54 countries. India is the main buyer of Sri Lankan's desiccated coconut at present, importing 1,605 mt sources said. USA, Pakistan, Germany, Japan, UK, Netherlands, South Korea, Egypt, Iran and France were among the main coconut importing countries of Sri Lanka during the last five months. (RK) |
