BSNL signs MoU with SLT for submarine cable system:

SLT embarks on landmark telecommunication project

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) and India's leading telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Bharat - Lanka optical fibre submarine cable system.

The proposed submarine cable system will be established between Tiruchchendur and Colombo. The system is initially expected to support hundreds of megabits per second bandwidth.

However, the cable system will be upgraded regularly, depending on its usage and would ultimately support traffic demand up to terra bit per second level.

Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited V. P. Sinha said that he foresees a bright future for both countries and that with this agreement the commitment towards each other will be further strengthened in order to have more operations between the two companies, which are the biggest in their respective countries.

The benefits of the optical fibre cable system are that it will support public telephone network (PSTN), IP broadband services, international private leased circuits (IPLC) and multimedia traffic between India and Sri Lanka.

BSNL could access at any time to the world through its existing and future cable systems such as SEA-ME- WE3 and SEA-ME-WE4 which will be connected to the global network.

This will also open opportunities to offer IP based services such as IP-VPN, for Indian and Sri Lankan customers. This cable system would also provide reliable connectivity having the existing microwave radio link.

Originally, an Analogue Microwave Link between Rameshwaran and Talaimannar was established in 1980, enabling a voice communication through the digital radio link between the two countries. The link was later abandoned in 1987 due to the disturbances. The radio link was re-established on a bigger scale last year.

"The political arena in Sri Lanka attaches prime importance to the relationship with India. In that context this will help establish closer links between India and Sri Lanka", the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom, Anil Obeysekera said.

BSNL is the world's seventh largest telecommunications company and has a customer base of over 43 million.

Its responsibilities include improvement of India's already impeccable quality of telecom services, expansion of telecom network, introduction of new telecom services in all villages and instilling confidence among its customers and this MoU would strengthen both parties relations and cooperation for their mutual benefit, said Shuhei Anan, Chief Executive Officer, Sri Lanka Telecom.

Sri Lanka Telecom has an annual turnover in excess of Rs. 22 billion.

The company possesses an islandwide telecommunications network, a customer base of 850,000 and provides a wide range of communication services: voice, data, IP services, Internet, mobile telephony.
