Second HelpAge Dementia Centre opened

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The second Dementia Centre of HelpAge Sri Lanka was opened at No. 14, Sinsapa Road, Colombo 6 recently. Late J.W.D. Perera has donated his house worth Rs. 15 million to HelpAge Sri Lanka to open the centre.

He said that the centre can accommodate eight patients and they have to come through the respective Divisional Secretaries of their areas. The first centre was opened at Mallika Nivasa, Colombo 4 in 2002. According to a recent survey conducted by the Health Ministry there are a considerable number of elders who are unable to perform their daily functions.

Therefore this category of elders who lost their mental capacity and become most vulnerable to marginalisation of the family and the society need good care.

The HelpAge has initiated this program of opening Dementia Care Centres in collaboration with the Psychiatric Unit of the Medical Faculty of University of Sri Jayawardhanapura.

Dementia is an ailment which is fast spreading among the elderly causing irreparable functional damage confining them to be heavily dependent on the family, society and the Government.
