A case of mistaken identity: Flying squad attacks postal employee by Tennekoon Kulasekara and Priyajith Fernando The Kandy Municipal Council Flying squad had stormed the Kandy main post office on Thursday afternoon and mercilessly attacked a postal employee on duty. The postal employee named Priyantha who was injured in the attack was admitted to the Kandy hospital accident ward. Police said investigations revealed that the Flying squad had raided the Kandy Goods Shed bus stand on Thursday afternoon to apprehend unauthorised traders hawking goods there. On seeing the flying squad one hawker had taken to his heels and gone into the Post office building. The Flying squad men pursuing him had got hold of the postal employee mistaking him for a fleeing trader and peppered him unmercifully. Later it transpired that it was a case of mistaken identity. Meanwhile, secretary All Ceylon Posts and Telecommunication Employees Union Rohitha Jayasinghe has called for an impartial inquiry in to the incident from Ministry and Police authorities. Police investigations are continuing. |
